35 volumes only (of 44, but including 5 vols. Minéraux and 6 vols. Supplément.), 4° (248 x 197mm.). Engraved title vignettes, headpieces and numerous plates and maps, some folding. (Light worming to vols II, IV and XI.) Contemporary near-uniform French mottled calf gilt, covers with centrally-placed arms of the ninth Earl of Lincoln, spines in six compartments with raised bands, two with green and blue morocco lettering-pieces, the others tooled in gilt, edges stained with alternate blue and red horizontal stripes (joints split, spines chipped, one lettering-piece lacking, others chipped). Provenance: Henry Pelham-Clinton, 2nd Duke of Newcastle and 9th Earl of Lincoln (1720-1794, binding).

This set includes all the work published during Buffon's lifetime, excluding only the later volumes published between 1788 and 1804 (Bernard de la Cépède's Ovipares et Serpents, 2 vols.; Poissons, 5 vols.; Cétacées and 1 vol. of the Supplément).
