2 volumes in 4, 2° (490 x 345mm.). 2 engraved titles, portrait of Beaulieu by Lubin after Pesne, engraved dedication, 194 ENGRAVED BATTLE PLANS, TOWN VIEWS AND PORTRAITS, the plates comprising 54 engraved portraits and memorial plates, one double-page, most with pasted overlay roundel portraits, arms and captions, 79 double-page battle plans and maps, 10 folding, 61 double-page panoramic town views, most surmounted by pasted portrait medallions, 19 of the section titles in manuscript, on guards throughout. (12 plates and leaves with outer margins extended to size, occasional light browning.) Contemporary red morocco gilt, covers with Greek-key pattern border, spines gilt decorated with flower motifs, g.e. Brunet I.718; due to complexity of collation, sold not subject to return.

Beaulieu's magnificent work formed part of the Cabinet du Roi, the various works assembled at the command of Louis XIV to illustrate the achievements of his reign. The 'Grand Beaulieu' illustrates the many military campaigns waged by Louis XIV throughout Europe. Most of the battle plans are accompanied by letterpress descriptions, although several in the second volume have manuscript section titles. (4)
