SMITH, Charles. Smith's Terrestrial Globe; exhibiting the whole discoveries of the different circumnavigators to 1828. Pub.d by C. Smith Strand Oct 1. 1810. London: circa 1828.

A terrestrial pocket globe, diameter 3¾ inches (95mm.). 12 hand coloured engraved gores, the title set in North Pacific, the globe marking the tracks of Cook's third voyage, La Perouse and Vancouver, original light varnish, metal pinions (a few minor abrasions to varnish along equator). Contained in original imitation fishskin-covered case, metal clasps, the interior coloured orange, without celestial gores (case slightly cracked, lacking two clasps).

An early reissue of Charles Smith's large pocket globe of 1810. Smith is better known as a map publisher in London, and his work in globe making undoubtably stems from the competitive spirit between his great rival John Cary, who dominated the field in early nineteenth century London. Loosely inserted in the globe is an original presentation slip 'William Dickin from Uncle Cha. Thorp 1831'. This globe has an interesting depiction of the 'lost island' of Isle Grande off the coast of Argentina. The island was 'discovered by Antonio de la Roche in 1675, but never sighted again! La Perouse searched for it in 1785 in vain, but the position of the island still lingered on Admiralty charts until the early 19th century. Smith marks the island on his globe as 'very doubtfull'.
