Study for the Figure of King Solomon
A study for the figure of Solomon in one of Poynter's most important works, The Visit of the Queen of Sheba to King Solomon, which the artist worked on from 1884 to 1890. It was bought by Thomas McLean for $6,000, exhibited at his Haymarket gallery, and then toured throughout the United Kingdom before being purchased for the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney. A 'finished study', smaller and differing in certain details, was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1891, and is now in the museum at Baroda, India.
Many studies for the painting exist. Two are reproduced in Malcolm Bell, The Drawings of Sir E.J. Poynter, 1905, pls. 22 and 38, and at least five are in Australian collections (see Victorian Olympians, exh. Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, 1975, cat. nos. D22-26).
Study of a Woman, seated
This and the following drawing are studies for the women, presumably wives or concubines, seated behind Solomon in Poynter's painting of The Visit of the Queen of Sheba to King Solomon, completed in 1890
