Engraved broadside map of Germany (475 x 340mm.). Circular map extending from Schleswig to Crenola, Mons to Smolenski., with regional names and major towns delineated, mountains, rivers and forests, grid of longitude and latitude, corners of the engraved plate decorated with globes and scientific instruments, putti riding eagles and carrying dedication and arms of Johann Baptista Garbe, Latin title set in banderole above, margins with graticule for longitude and latitude. The engraved map set within letterpress text, German title along upper margin, explanation and imprint along lower, side margins with typographic decorations, the single sheet hinged on backing board. Provenance: Hauslab-Liechtenstein collection.
A rare and unrecorded broadside map of Germany by a member of the renowned Augsburg family of engravers, modelled on the 15th-century images of Germany in the round. David Mannasser produced a number of landscape views, armorials and depictions of fire-work festivities, most notably for Leopold I in 1660. He died in Graz in 1664. cf Thieme-Becker XXIV, 21.
