LISZT, Franz (1811-1886). Autograph working manuscript signed and inscribed of Festgesang zur Enthüllung des Carl-August-Denkmals in Weimar, a setting of the words Carl August weilt mit uns, entitled Fanfar, zur Enthüllung des Carl August Monument and dated am 3ten September 1875, Weimar, black ink and blue crayon, scored for male choir, brass and percussion, the first 8 bars on a system of 7 staves, the subsequent 25 bars on a system of 5 and 6 staves, the staves of the third system extended by hand into the righthand margin, many alterations and insertions, 1 1/3 pages, folio, 356 x 270mm., (the top and lefthand edges frayed, central tear, the top edge of the verso disfigured by old mounting tape)
This festival chorus was written for the unveiling of the monument to the Grand Duke Carl August, the friend and patron of Schiller and Goethe, on 3 September 1875, at a ceremony when amongst others the Emperor and Empress of Germany were present. The work was published posthumously in 1887.
