Lot Essay

Boos was the leading sculptor active in Munich in the last quarter of the eighteenth century. A number of his terracottas served as modelli for large-scale sculptures, and it is possible that the present, hitherto unknown, figure was made with a similar purpose in mind. In fact, it is closely comparable in style to a 180cm high limewood St. Sebastian (Kassel, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, for which see Woeckel, op.cit. p.101, fig.5, and p.105, fig.10), although they are not similar enough in pose to suggest that the one was a first idea for the other.
