These wall-lights are after the celebrated model by Antoine-André Ravrio supplied in 1805 for the salle à manger at the Petit Trianon and consequently sent in 1805 to the salle à manger of the Empress Josephine's apartments at Fontainebleau (ill. in J.P. Samoyault, Musée National du Château de Fontainebleau, catalog des collections de mobilier, vol. I, Paris, 1989, p. 129, fig. 95). The Fontainebleau wall-lights were exhibited in 1882. VIAN specialised in manufacturing fine quality reproductions of celebrated models and supplied much of the decoration for l'hôtel Aubert de Fontenay, Paris. A pair of wall-lights by G. Vian was sold in these Rooms, 6 June 1991, lot 75, while an unsigned pair of closely related design to the offered lot was sold in these Rooms, 10 December 1992, lot 32
