AN ITALIAN GREEN-PAINTED, EBONISED AND PARCEL-GILT ARMORIAL CARTOUCHE surmounted by the roraring lion of St Marks upon a naturalistically-carved rocky outcrop, his right paw resting upon an open book inscribed PAX/TIBI/MAR/CE/EVAN/GELIS/TA/MEUS/, the vigorously carved scroll cartouche with entrelac and foliate borders centred by a grotesque mask above a domed oval coat-of-arms with six rosettes upon a green and giltwood ground witha moulded slip frame flanked by partly clad classical maidens upon pedestals, the whole supported by a further scrolled cartouche centred by a putti supporting garlands of fruiting swags above a foliate-carved boss finial, mid-16th Century, possibly Roman, the lion of St Marks and the central armorial oval panel associated and probably later
