Note:
The Prince Imperial met Lord Chelmsford for the first time on 9th April, became his guest, and was nominally placed upon his staff. On 1st June, the Prince Imperial was a member of a scouting party with Lieutenant Carey and an escort of six Natal Horse. Near the Ityotyzi River, the party dismounted, rested and, just as they were preparing to saddle, they were ambushed by some forty Zulus. Three men were killed including the Prince Imperial. His body was found the next day by Captain Dundonald Cochrane of the Edendale contingent.
