Extract:
I have asked for leave to go and join General Crealock on the Lower Tugela, I fancy that most of the work will be done from that side. Also General Crealock is an old friend, who wants me to join him and will help me. If I go there I shall be the 3rd Senior Officer in the division. General Crealock tried very hard to get Lord Chelmsford to let me go as his assistant adjutant General, but he insisted on my marching the drafts up the country so I have lost a good appointment and I must hope for something else to turn up. Of course long before this you have heard all about our wreck and escape which was most providential, if there had been any wind very few of us would have lived to tell the tale. I am glad to say that all the Generals have been very complimentary to me about saving the men from the wreck.

Note:
The S.S. "Clyde" ran aground on a reef off Dyer's Island on 3rd April. With little wind, calm seas and lack of panic, all on board were landed before the vessel sank.
