The Journal commences with the departure of the draft of the 24th Regiment. It continues with the voyage of the S.S. "Clyde", its wreck and associated cuttings from the press praising the conduct of the Guards officers. Subsequent entries are headed Maritzburgh, Howick, Curry's Post, Mooi River, Escourt, Colenso, Ladysmith, Modder Spruit, Dundee, Conference Hill, Fort Newdigate, Fort Marshall, Ulundi, Kwamagwaza, St. Paul's, Fort Pearson, Verulam and Durban, amongst others.
