Note:
The cover is addressed to "The Editor of the Graphic". Symons was an accomplished draughtsman and a number of his drawings, usually reworked by an engraver in London, had appeared in both the Graphic and the Illustrated London News. The cover is dated just over two weeks after the defence of Rorke's Drift. When Private Henry Hook was brought before Major-General Lord Chelmsford to give his account of the famous defence, it was Captain Symons who took it down. Henry Hook received the Victoria Cross.
