Extract:
Here I am still in this vile spot - fairly well. Not ill that is, but all of us here have colds and feel out of sorts. We expect to go to Natal shortly as they consider a war there inevitable sooner or later with the Zulus. The Kaffir war down here is not over though an amnesty has been proclaimed for all except chiefs who give themselves up so we expect it soon to finish when we will have our hands free for the Zulus.
We, that is Glennie and Pope and Daly and Roche 1/24th who are down here sick - we've had breakfast and have been to stable to look after our horses.
Note:
Captain Farquhar Glennie was still with the regiment in 1880; Lieutenant James Patrick Daly was to be killed with Pope at Isandhlwana. Lieutenant the Hon. Ulick De Rupe Burke Roche served on detachment at St. John's River throughout the 1879 war.
