Lot Essay

In the final years of production at Axminster before the move to Wilton, a number of carpets of relatively coarse manufacture were produced copying eighteenth century Turkish rugs, but expanding the scale of the designs. Copies of Ghiordes and Ushak designs were woven for Ickworth House, Suffolk in 1829. A carpet of identical design to the present lot but of a much larger size can be seen in the Marquess of Bath's dining room at Longleat, Wiltshire.
