Lot Essay

The bombé-fronted bergère-chair, with foliate and turn-fluted baluster arm-support and fluted and columnar legs, capped by flowered tablets, derives from a Louis XVI pattern of the 1780's. Patterns for seats with related features were published in A.Hepplewhite & Co., Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788, fig. 9 and T.Sherton, The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1793, pl. XXXV.
