Lot Essay

This multi-purpose table with pilaster-ends and ormolu-rosette mounts is designed in the early 19th Century French-influenced antique style, popularised by George Smith's Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1808. It evolved from his 'backgammon work-table', with central sliding games-board top and concealed drawers illustrated plate 78. Its scrolled plinths correspond with that found on a card-table bearing the label of George Simson (fl. 1780-1839), cabinet-maker of St. Paul's Church Yard, which was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 8 July 1988, lot 126.
