In the 1870s Courbet's involvement in the insurrections of the Commune de Paris, and his resistance to France's imperial government, brought him a great deal of disrepute. This came to a head when he participated in the dismantling of the Vendôme column on 16 May 1871, resulting in his imprisonment at Sainte-Pelagie.
Still lives, of which a similar work was sold in these Rooms on 14 June 1996, lot 66, were painted during Courbet's stay in prison, when his sole inspiration came from the foods and flowers brought by friends and family who came to visit him there. Upon his release he abandoned this theme and rarely returned to it.
This work has been examined and authenticated by Jean-Jacques Fernier.
To be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné supplement being prepared by Jean-Jacques Fernier.
