Professor Lorenz Eitner dates this work to 1822-3 and confirms in a letter dated 24 February 1992 that it is related to a (reversed) lithograph La Course (Delteil 59). This and the following lot Eitner states 'are fine studies of rather sponteneous executions which undoubtedly served in the preparation of the corresponding lithographs'. Another small watercolour of the same series, Jockey Holding a Horse, was formerly in the Pierre Dubaut collection.
