Lot Essay

During the 1950s Moore received several important commissions for large sculptures to be placed in architectural settings, most notably the traverine marble Reclining Figure (ibid, no. 416) for the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. Draped seated Figure against a curved Wall was one of eight projects Moore executed for the commission and was one of several he conceived in which his figure is set against an architectural backdrop of steps or a wall in the early 1950s.
