This figure would have been modelled to stand on a funerary vessel, probably with another, similar, figure. They were first described by R.T.D. FitzGerald (1944), an assistant district officer, who saw and described them in 1940, on the southern border of Sokoto State (then Province); the tradition probably extended back at least until the 18th century
