Lot Essay

This python's lower jaw is clearly a fragment of a large bronze python of the type which adorned the roofs of palaces and entrance gateways in the city of Benin. Such pythons are depicted on Benin bronze plaques and other castings and were recorded by European visitors as early as the 18th century. No complete bronze python survives but fifteen bronze python heads are recorded by Dark (1982, p.2.4.6)
