Lot Essay

Although principally of a secular nature, the figurative designs on most tshambwan represent totemic ancestors and the hooks were sometimes regarded as representations of specific individuals. On such occasions a hook would be exhibited, decorated with coloured leaves, hibiscus flowers etc. and often with a basket of offerings to be eaten by the sister's children of the clan celebrating the ancestor.
