DEMOSTHENES (384-322 B.C.). Orationes duae & sexaginta. Libanii sophistae in eas ipsas orationes argumenta. Vita Demosthenis per Libanium. Eiusdem vita per Plutarchum, in Greek. Ed. Aldus Manutius. Venice: Aldine Press [Andrea Torresano], November 1504 [ca.1520-1527].
2 parts in 1 volume, royal 4° (280 x 175mm). Greek type. Aldine woodcut anchor device (Fletcher f6). FINE PARISIAN GOLD-TOOLED BINDING OF 1812 BY COURTEVAL, straight-ground crimson morocco, broad foliate border surrounding a large rhomb formed by triangular panels of densely massed ornament, five-pointed star in a blind-tooled roundel in the centre, compartment of spine densely tooled with stars, dots and flowers, broad turn-ins similarly decorated, gilt edges, pale-blue watered-silk liners with leafy border and a vase tool in the corners, paper and vellum flyleaves, signed inside front cover. Provenance: George John, second Earl Spencer 1758-1834 (MS acquisition number 3152); Manchester, John Rylands University Library (1894 bookplate; 1988 Sotheby sale, lot 26).

Corrected second edition, reprinted by Torresano at the Aldine Press from Aldus's first edition of 1504. The original date was maintained in the colophon, but the edition's true date must be about two decades later. Courteval was one of the greatest Parisian binders of the Premier Empire, and this is undoubtedly one of his masterpieces. H.G.Fletcher, New Aldine Studies (1988), p. 55-58.
