Fine late 17th-century Parisian gold-tooled scarlet morocco, bound for a member of the Michieli family of Venice, the coroneted Michieli arms in centre of the sides within palm fronds and a wreath, interlaced initials J A M in the corners, same initials crowned in compartments of the spine, gilt and marbled edges, marbled endpapers. Provenance: perhaps Giovanni (Johannes) Alvise Michieli (arms), who was prefect and captain of Bergamo in 1676.
The first book (of eighteen) published in Paris by the grandson of Andrea Torresano, father-in-law and successor of Aldus Manutius. Book 8 includes a note on Columbus. The Michieli family played a prominent part in Venetian history for many centuries. IN BRIGHT CONDITION. Adams E-82.
