Half-titles, titles with woodcut vignette arms, 263 engraved sepia plates by Houel, most in aquatint, 2 double-page, the plates numbered 1-264, the map of Sicily numbered 245/246. (Occasional light spotting, corner of plate 56 neatly restored, some margins in volumes II and IV slightly stained.) Straight-grained red morocco gilt, covers with triple gilt fillet borders, small tied-ribbon tool in the corners, spines gilt in eight sections, raised bands, two sections lettered, others with flower tools, gilt inner dentelles, g.e., blue silk endpapers, by H.Walther, with his ticket.
FIRST EDITION bound up from the parts. A magnificently bound copy of Houel's account of his travels to Sicily, Malta and Lipari. Houel was appointed King's pensioner at the French Academy in Rome in 1770, and travelled extensively around Italy 1770-71, returning on a second tour in 1776. From his numerous sketches, Houel worked up and engraved the plates himself on his return to Paris.
