CHINESE DRAWINGS. Manufactures [The Silk, Cotton, Tea and Porcelain trades]. [China, circa 1800].

Large oblong 2° (445 x 540mm.). An album of 48 gouache drawings of the silk, cotton, tea and porcelain manufactures, black rule borders, on heavy native paper, 35 with captions in Chinese (several captions shaved). Contemporary straight-grained green morocco, gilt, covers with delicate leaf and Greek-key pattern borders, central gilt arms, upper cover lettered Chinese Drawings, Manufactures, spine flat in seven sections tooled in gilt (edges rubbed). Provenance: William Wyndham, Baron Grenville (1759-1834) later Prime Minster (covers with his arms, verso front free endpaper inscribed "no.7 Lord Grenville", contemporary label pasted on upper cover inscribed "Swallow Packet L.95 no.82. Rt.Hon.ble Ld. Grenville. Chinese Drawing 1803").

A FINE ALBUM OF CHINESE DRAWINGS OF MANUFACTURES. The drawings comprise:
SILK CULTIVATION, 12 drawings: Picking the Mulberry leaves; bringing in the mulberry leaves; feeding the silk worms (2); care of the silk worms (2); drying the silk; collecting the silk worms; spinning the silk thread; stretching the thread; dyeing, drying and weaving the silk; the merchants cutting and sewing the silk cloth.
COTTON PRODUCTION, 12 drawings: Taking the cotton bales to the merchants for threading; washing the cotton; drying the cotton; picking the cotton; boiling the cotton; making the cotton thread (2); combing and stretching the cotton; weaving the cotton (2); dyeing the cloth; taking the cloth to the merchants.
TEA PROCESSING, 12 drawings: Preparing the ground for planting, planting out the tea bushes; watering the tea bushes; picking the tea; sorting the tea (2); drying the tea; pounding the tea; packing the tea; transporting the tea; toasting the tea; kneading the tea at the merchants'.
PORCELAIN MANUFACTURE, 12 drawings: Packing the bowls; bringing kaolin from the mountains; pounding the kaolin (2); throwing and moulding the clay; drying the pots; painting the pots; taking the pots to the kilns; packing the pots; transporting the pots; firing the smaller bowls; unpacking and storing the pots.
