Elaborate title border in black, tan and green, 131 large chiaroscuro portrait medallions as called for, in one or two tones of ochre and brown (final illustration with original paper strip repair overprinted, most offset. Some leaves spotted, small wormhole in first 6 leaves, marginal except to title, small marginal rusthole in C6, hole in final leaf with loss to 4 lines of imprint.) Contemporary limp vellum, covers with double fillet border and fleur-de-lys cornerpieces with central oval in black, upper cover with title in gilt with date 1593 (outer edges of covers repaired, slightly soiled).

FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN. Of the intended 148 medallions only 131 were completed in the Latin, German and Italian editions, and the etched outlines are left blank. These comprised 141 single portraits and 7 double. The colours vary slightly between the different editions with various modifications to adjust the definition.
