ARCHER, Jeffrey (Baron, b. 1940). Typescript print-out with autograph corrections of the final draft of Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less, 1975, including numerous amendments (words, phrases, passages of dialogue and cancellations) written by the author in pencil, a few in the handwriting of Mary Archer (his wife) and in another hand, 220 pages, large 4° (295 x 210mm.).

The final draft of Jeffrey Archer's first and most famous novel, the story of how four men swindled by a fraudster get their money back by inflicting a series of ingenious frauds upon him.

It was written during the most vivid passage of Lord Archer's immensely colourful life. In 1974 he was made bankrupt by a fateful investment in Aquablast, a Canadian company claiming to possess a revolutionary car-engine anti-pollution device. The investment proved worthless, leaving him insolvent and forced to resign from the House of Commons.

This spectacularly successful novel was written in eight weeks, while staying with the Master of an Oxford college, in a bid to raise money. The plot was a dream of revenge, and the book attracted an extraordinary public response. It has been seen as Lord Archer's most passionate and intense feat of writing and set him on the road to becoming an international top-selling novelist.

The author circulated three or four print-outs of the draft among friends for corrections or improvements. The present typescript is corrected almost entirely in the hand of Jeffrey Archer or his wife. All his amendments and additions are included in the published version.
