NELSON, Horatio (Admiral, 1758-1805). Autograph letter signed ('Nelson & Bronte') to Captain Russell, Medusa, 15 August 1801, sending despatches for Renard, reminding him about signals and to 'get the dispatches sent herewith on shore as soon as possible', one page, 4° (small splits at folds, slightly discoloured).
A postscript covering the lower portion of the page conveys a sense of urgency - Russell is to return the Fox directly and Nelson wishes him to ascertain if the French remain in Dunkirk Roads all night 'as I could send my flotilla to attack them', with another reminder about signals.
The letter was written while Nelson prepared to attack the French fleet at Boulogne. The Medusa was a 31 gun frigate. It proved a disastrous engagement, in which 12 British vessels were lost and no French craft taken or sunk.
