Early 19h-century olive straight-grained morocco gilt, edges gilt. Provenance: Robert Smyth of bedef.; William Wyndover (contemporary signatures, the latter on inner pages); bought in John Woodhouse Sale 26.0.0 (Leigh & Sotheby 1803); Alexander Peckover, Baron of Wisbech (bookplate).
Caxton's translation of Image du Monde, wrongly ascribed to Vincent de Beauvais, one of the most popular texts of medieval science, grammar, logic, etc. A VERY RARE BOOK. STC 24764 records 9 copies (including two imperfect). According to Hodnett 1970-1991, many of the curious woodcuts came from other printers.
