ELGAR, Sir Edward (1857-1934). Autograph letter signed to Mrs Alfred Hobday, Severn House, Hampstead, 19 April 1921, a spontaneous letter in which Elgar declines an invitation to play the piano, I treated it as a joke; of course I have no intention of attempting to 'play' (I cannot play the piano at all!) in public, 2 pages, 8°, 200 x 150mm., with autograph envelope.
Elgar could, of course, play the piano. As a child he had won praise for his piano improvisations and it was through teaching the piano that he met his wife, Alice, who had died just over a year before this letter was written. Later in 1921 Elgar sold Severn House in Hampstead and moved to a flat.
