VERDI, Giuseppe (1813-1901). Autograph letter signed to his publisher Tito Ricordi, St Agata, 25 April 1872, saying how happy he is to be finally at St Agata as he is in need of a rest and that he has received the picture his correspondent sent him and that it is hung over his piano to remind him of the fate of our Aida, black ink, 2¼ pages, 8°, 201 x 128mm.
It is unclear from the inscription whether the letter is dated April or August 1872. However, the former makes greater sense as Aida was performed in Parma, its second production, on 20 April 1872. Verdi worked hard on this production, directing rather than conducting the performance, and it was the Parma, not the Milan, production which Verdi sent on tour. Parma is close to St Agata and it is likely that Verdi returned there after the Parma production. It is known that he was at home on 26 April 1872 when he wrote to Cesare de Sanctis.
This is a friendly letter wishing Ricordi only health, health, health.
