This anthology comprises eight accounts by six Jesuit missionaries in Japan during the years 1571-81: namely, Aloisius Froes, Franciscus Carrion, Gregory de Gespedes, Laurence Meria, Luis Froes, and Francisco Cabral. Subjects covered include topographical descriptions, the teaching of the catechism, spoken Japanese, Francis Xavier, the number of Christians in each community, and the efforts made to propagate Christianity. Saint Ignatius of Loyola had encouaged his fellow Jesuits to write frequently to each other. This collection of accounts is representative of the accurate and detailed letters which contained 'an abundance of collateral data' (Lach I p. 314) that made the Society of Jesus appear often as an intelligence network: 'it was not long before the Jesuits had worked out an intelligence system unequalled by any state in Europe at the time, with the possible exception of Venice' (Lach I p. 315). The parts by Luis Froes are particularly detailed, and include discussions about his ongoing problems with the Emperor's Chief Minister, Nobunanga. BLSTC German, 441; not in Adams.
