FIRST and rare edition of an oration delivered by Jean de Luxembourg, abbot of Ivry, as part of a concerted effort to restore Anne of Cleves as the wife of Henry VIII. Disappointed at Anne's appearance and deportment, Henry engineered a divorce from her only months after their marriage in 1540 and settled Anne in England as the king's "sister", preventing her return to Germany. There had been some hope that Anne would be reinstated as queen after the fall of her successor, Katherine Howard, and on Henry's own death in 1547 a similar campaign was undertaken to recognise Anne as queen dowager in order to secure her status and financial arrangements. Jean de Luxembourg addresses his oration to Edward VI on behalf of Anne's parents, calling upon the young king's compassion and reason. It was printed by Nicolas Paris, printer at Troyes, at Jean's own press at L'Arrivour. BLSTC French 293; Brunet III, 1245 ("fort rare").
