Lot Essay

The present glass belongs to an unusual group of small dated drinking vessels, those recorded in the literature all with lugs and loose rings to the bowls, of either clear or blue tint. These previously noted examples all bear dates of the 1590's; this, therefore, would appear to be the earliest dated recorded example. Cf. Axel von Saldern, German Enameled Glass, p. 170, figs. 309 and 310 and Olga Drahotová, Europäisches Glas, p. 78, pl. 47 (left). Axel von Saldern, ibid., pp. 446-7 lists numerous examples enamelled with well-known religious scenes; however, the present subject 'David and Goliath' is not included
