[COTTON, Sir Robert Bruce (1571 - 1631)] Manuscript transcript of 'A Shorte View of King Henry the third his Raigne', a political tract, including minor variants of the published text, written in brown ink in a 17th century hand, 40 pages, 127 x 90 mm, ruled margins, old figured silk over paste-board. Provenance. Thomas Crane (bookplate and inscription). Robert, Marquess of Crewe (bookplate).
Cotton, attached to the parliamentary party, published his popular tract in 1627, one of only two works printed in his lifetime. It reflects his views by freely criticising one of Charles I's predecessors, ('Princes' Natures are more volatile & sooner cloyed than others: more transitory their favours'), and was to be re-printed several times at the beginning of the Civil War.
Thomas Crane who owned the manuscript in 1799 and believed it to be in Cotton's autograph, was Minister of St Olave's at Chester.
