Frodsham number 986 has many unusual features, not least its twin up-and-down indications (see previous lot). The signature on the backplate Arnold's Charles Frodsham, Clockmaker to the Queen is a feature that only appears on his earlier pieces. The well proportioned case is without question French. Similar examples were made by the eminent company of Le Roy & Fils of Palais Royal Galerie Montpensier and it may be that the movement was exported to Paris to be cased-up and sold there in an exhibition; indeed the clock itself was consigned for this sale from abroad.
