Lot Essay

Richard Shone describes this work as 'a photograph of Vaslav Nijinksy dressed in Siamese costume for his role in the ballet 'Les Orientales' (1910)...The photograph (by Druet) is propped on a gramaphone cabinet painted by the artist's dauther, Angelica Garnett, which stands against one of Grant's caryatid figures (the right-hand one) painted on either side of the studio fireplace. The pot was thrown by Quentin Bell and painted by Grant circa 1968. The photograph appears in another still life of the period and in a pastel study...it is one of the best works of Grant's 'late flowering''
