8° (229 x 145mm). Half-title. 6 hand-coloured engraved plates by William Blake after Maria Flaxman. (Occasional light spotting.) Contemporary half roan (rebacked, one corner renewed, scuffed, later endpapers). Provenance: AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY (inscribed "From the Author" on half-title); G.J.Bagguley (note by); George Goyder (armorial bookplate, inscriptions).
A LARGE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION WITH THE PLATES BY BLAKE. George Goyder notes, on the rear pastedown, that "The colouring of this volume strongly resembles my copy of Blakes Songs of Innocence & Experience (Copy P) also executed about 1803. The Technique is similar & the shading of the figures bears a striking resemblance... Nov. 1964". Bentley (p.579) refers to this copy: 'Hayley gave a copy to Catherine Blake..., and another copy 'From the Author' with the plates coloured, apparently by Blake, is in the collection of Mr George Goyder'.
