BUNYAN, John (1628-1688). The Holy City, or the New Jerusalem. London: 1665. [Bound second with:] John BUNYAN. Come and Welcome to Jesus Christ. London: R. Ware, C. Hitch, and J. Hodges, 1750.

2 works in one volume, 12° and 8° (137 x 80mm). Woodcut portrait and engraved frontispiece, and 2 woodcut illustrations in Come and Welcome. (Slightly shaved, occasionally affecting catchwords in Come and Welcome, small tear at upper hinge of first 2 leaves of Holy City affecting first word of title, occasional light spotting or staining.) 18th-century speckled calf (extremities very lightly rubbed). Provenance: various 18th-century names; R.L. Harmsworth (sale Sotheby's, 27 Jan. 1947, lot 2656); George Goyder (bookplate).

RARE first edition of The Holy City, derived from sermons preached at Bedford jail during his internment there from 1660-1672. As Harrison explains, the "extreme rarity" of early editions of Bunyan's works is due to the Great Fire of 1666, which destroyed whole stocks belonging to booksellers in the City. Wing B5534 (citing 2 copies); Harrison A Bibliography of the Works of John Bunyan, X (listing 5 copies, including this one).
