8° (170 x 103mm). Licence leaf before title. (L1 with section of lower outer corner lacking [?paper-fault] affecting one word of text, some browning.) Contemporary mottled calf, spine in five compartments, with repeat-tooling of a single centrally-placed "golden-fleece" tool (spine rubbed and chipped, joints slightly split, stitching broken at front). Provenance: George Baillie (d.1738, signature, armorial bookplate, dated 1724 and designating him "one of the Lords of the Treasury"); Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872, sale Sotheby's 25 November 1975, lot 3857).

FIRST EDITION WITH A DISTINGUISHED PROVENANCE. The first treatise refutes the Patriarchia of Sir Robert Filmer, the second is a statement of the principles of democracy. PMM 163; Wing L-2766.
