2 volumes, 2° (text leaves 267 x 158 inlaid to 482 x 175mm). 100 letterpress leaves, printed title in red and black, 5 plates, extra-illustrated with 386 additional plates, most window-mounted, ORIGINAL DRAWINGS in watercolour and pen-and-ink by William Heath bound in as additional half-titles and title-pages, with 6½ pages of text in three columns pasted in. (Most plates trimmed, some slight marginal discolouration, additional half-title of volume one pasted down, additional title-page of volume one loose, last few leaves of volume 2 loose.) Contemporary blue straight grained morocco, gilt triple fillet to sides, double raised bands on spine, two double gilt fillets on turn-ins, gilt edges, maroon endpapers (extremities and spine slightly rubbed), in oak box.

A fine Grangerised copy of the FIRST EDITION comprising (including the 5 original plates) 250 portraits, 14 scenes, 70 views of which some are double-page and or folding, 39 engravings of medals and other ephemera, 18 others including genealogies, heraldry and a plan. The five original plates are The Battle of Worcester, Lying in State, Standing in State, Declaration of Fairfax and others with their autographs, and lastly Cromwell's autograph, house in Whitehall, arms, and escuthceon. The portraits include not only multiples of the Commonwealth and Protectorate's greatest protagonists, but also represent nearly every other figure of note from the late 1630s to the Restoration. Views of nearly every city of importance are included, and the scenes are both illustrative and satirical. (2)
