[DANCE OF DEATH]. Icones Mortis aliquot Imaginibus, in Latin, French, and German. Frankfurt: Eberhardt Kieser, 1623.

8° (146 x 95mm). Title in Latin, French and German, 8 leaves of text and 60 engraved plates after Holbein's Dance of Death, engraved text in German, letterpress text on versos in Latin and French. 18th-century light brown morocco blindstamped, central oval stamp of floral vase (a few small spine repairs, front hinge reinforced). Provenance: Edmund Sydney Williams (bookplate); Sir John Stirling Maxwell (1866-1956, bookplate).

A rare edition. The expressive engravings with charming botanical borders are by the engraver and publisher Eberhard Kieser and constitute his most important work (Thieme-Becker XX, 274). They are closely based on Holbein's images of the Lyons editions of the Dance of Death of the previous century. Brunet III, 257.
