Lot Essay

The drawings have been traditionally attributed to Bernardo Castello, no doubt because the subjects recall his celebrated illustrations for Tasso's Gerusalemme Liberata. Neither Irene or Rinieri identified in the present drawings, nor the Venetian context of some of the scenes accord with Tasso's epic. The drawings presumably illustrate a little known chivalric work which, like a large number of similar epic poems, were inspired by the success of Tasso
