Lot Essay

Simon Troger (1683-1768) came from the eastern Tyrol, studying in Merano, Innsbruck and probably Italy. From about 1726 he was working in Munich, and had a large workshop in Haidhausen. He specialised in the combination of wood and ivory groups with glass eyes, and sometimes carved his groups within architectural surrounds (Philippowich, op. cit., fig.178).
