Lot Essay

The date and attribution of the present relief is based on its relation to a triptych in the Musée de Cluny, Paris. The triptych, formerly in the treasury of Saint Sulpice, Tarn, includes an Adoration of the Magi, the composition of which is nearly identical to the present ivory (Les Fastes du Gothique, loc.cit.). The disposition of the three figures within the trefoil arch niche of both reliefs, and the poses of two of the magi correspond exactly; it is only the positioning of the left hand of the third magus which varies. The Cluny triptych, with its shallow but strong linear carving, is noted as an important turning-point in the development of 14th century French sculpture. The present panels would appear to have originated from the same Parisian workshop.
