Title and text in Latin and German, 64 pp. only, lacking the last 4 sections on southern France, Brabant, Saxony, and Italy. 54 (of 100) engraved plates depicting 315 cross-sections of marbles, all elaborately hand-coloured, and with 16 additional ORIGINAL DRAWINGS in bodycolour of marble cross-sections, mounted as frontispiece and on 5 leaves at the end. (A few text leaves lightly browned, first 3 plates and one leaf bound upside-down.) 18th-century English red morocco, single gilt floral corner ornament on sides, gilt spine with lettering-piece, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Provenance: Harley (inscription on front free endpaper); Earl of Derby (bookplate, Knowsley Hall shelfmark).

FIRST EDITION. Wirsing, engraver, limner and art dealer, published this work to depict the variety of marbles arranged by geographical regions. It was published the following year in Amsterdam with the same plates (see Landwehr, Studies in Dutch Books with Coloured Plates, 1). The present copy is supplemented by 16 original drawings in bodycolour of marbles.
