FIRST EDITION. This is the only work by Kaempfer that was published during his lifetime. Kaempfer had been part of the Swedish embassy to the Shah of Persia, but instead of returning at the end of his tour of duty, he signed up with the Dutch East India Company. Initially he was a company physician at Bandar Abbas, but he joined in 1690 the yearly expedition to Japan and developed a keen interest in that country; it is no coincidence that the greater portion of this book deals with, amongst other subjects, Japanese flora. Amoenitatum Exoticarum reflects the ecclectic and somewhat eccentric interests of this Swedish diplomat-doctor. Nissen BBI 1018; Wellcome III, p. 376.
