Lot Essay

This pattern of Grecian writing-table corresponds to the table with spindle ends which is illustrated in Gillows 1818 E.S. Sketch Books (nos.2079 and 2084 and see: G.Wills, Craftsmen and Cabinet-makers of Classic English Furniture, Edinburgh, 1974, pp.117-8 and figs. 108 and 109). The executed writing- table illustrated in plate 108 was subsequently sold anonymously, Phillips London, 9 October 1990, lot 133. It is smaller than the present lot but clearly from the same design. Other variants on the basic theme include a writing-table with trellis-filled end-supports that is illustrated in M.Jourdain, Regency Furniture, London, rev.ed., 1965, p.77, fig.178.
